Mark Grotjahn's Artwork

Mark Grotjahn’s work covers a wide spectrum. Everything from geometric illustrations to large scale gestural paintings, some of which are even applied onto sculptures. The goal of this project was to design a book that could display his life’s work in a way that would showcase the sheer magnitude of it.

A key element to consider when putting together the design was that the book should not take away from the artwork, nor should it compete with the artwork. Grotjahn’s work was to be the center of attention from cover to cover.

Using a strict grid and ample white space would allow the reader to appreciate the artwork for what it is. Several of the photographs were displayed across a full page or even a spread to instill an atmosphere similar to that of a gallery. With this in mind, a simple sans serif typeface was chosen to complement Grotjahn’s work.
